Why Comments Are Important and Why They Cannot Be Easily Deleted
Comments play a crucial role in teamecho. They are the foundation for building a true culture of dialogue and feedback within your organization.
Why is this important? Through textual in-depth feedback, your leadership team identifies topics that matter to you and your team, enabling them to take action and improve your situation.
What Are the Consequences of Deleting a Comment?
Feedback, unless offensive, is inherently legitimate – even if it’s occasionally expressed a bit harshly. If a comment suddenly disappears from the tool, it can leave a negative impression.
Deleting a comment might give leaders or colleagues the impression of censorship, suggesting that uncomfortable comments are arbitrarily removed when they don’t align with certain preferences or agendas.
This perception can lead to a negative dynamic in how the tool is used and may ultimately affect the atmosphere in your organization.
Suggestions for Handling Negative Comments
If you feel that a comment – whether your own or someone else’s – is too harsh or negative, here are some tips on how to handle it effectively:
You Are the Author of the Comment
It’s great that you’re reflecting on your feedback and wish to reconsider something that may have been written hastily. Here’s how to proceed:
- Respond directly to your own comment in teamecho and provide clarification.
For example:
"The comment was too harshly worded. I want to apologize for that. However, I still believe the topic I raised is important, and I would like to discuss it together."
You Are a Team Lead or Administrator
As a leader, addressing negative comments is particularly important, as they often reflect dissatisfaction or frustration from a team member.
- Acknowledge the tone and seek input on how the comment could have been phrased differently:
For example:
"Apart from the content of this comment, I’d like to discuss how we want to communicate and interact with one another."
"How could this comment have been phrased differently?"
- Address the underlying issue:
"It seems the team member who wrote this comment wanted to highlight [specific issue]. While the tone was inappropriate, the topic itself is important. Let’s discuss it together."
Requests for Deletion
For the reasons mentioned above, comments cannot be deleted directly by users in teamecho. However, in a few exceptional cases, we do accommodate deletion requests. These include:
- Highly defamatory statements
- Attacks targeting an individual (including names)
- Illegal content
Who Decides If a Comment Should Be Deleted?
The decision to delete a comment generally rests with your tool administrator. They evaluate the comment in the context of your organization, forward the deletion request to teamecho, and take responsibility for the potential consequences (e.g., impression of censorship, negative dynamics in tool usage).
While deletion is possible in rare cases, our goal is to avoid deleting comments wherever possible. teamecho thrives on authentic feedback, even when it’s challenging.
